Where to Stay for Erta Ale

There are no hotels at the volcano. Here is where to sleep either side of your expedition.

During the tour itself you sleep where the operator takes you: on a mattress on the crater rim, in open-air beds at Hamed Ela, or at simple camps near Lake Afrera. There is nothing to book there. What you do need is a good bed the night before you set off and the night after you return, covered in salt and dust.

Most tours start and finish in Mekele, the capital of Tigray, which has the best choice of hotels in the north. Most international travellers also spend at least one night in Addis Ababa, often near Bole Airport for an early domestic flight. Tours starting in Semera usually include or arrange accommodation there — ask your operator.

We do not show prices or guest scores here: rates in Ethiopia move quickly with demand and exchange rates, so every card links to Trip.com for live availability.

Tips for booking

  • Book Mekele for the night before your tour. Pick-ups are early and domestic flights can be delayed.
  • Keep the night after flexible. Tours sometimes return late — choose a hotel that can take a late check-in.
  • Ask your operator for their pick-up hotels. Staying at one of them simplifies the morning.
  • Carry some cash. Card acceptance outside the big hotels is limited.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are there hotels near Erta Ale?

No. During the tour you sleep in basic camps, in Afar villages and on the crater rim, all organised by your operator. Hotels are in Mekele, Semera and Addis Ababa.

Where do Danakil tours pick up in Mekele?

Usually from your hotel or from a central hotel agreed with the operator. Confirm the time and place the evening before departure.

Should I stay near the airport in Addis Ababa?

If you have an early flight to Mekele or Semera, yes — Bole is congested in the morning. If you have a spare day, the city centre is more interesting.

Do I need to book hotels in advance?

In the high season (December–February) and around Ethiopian holidays, yes. Outside those periods it is still wise to book at least the night before your tour.
